Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and the CLASSY Awards

You Can Vote!

Right now, Boston Area Rape Crisis Center has a chance to win CLASSY awards in three categories. BARCC is currently running third for Charity Of The Year and has a real shot at willing. Balloting closes on the 5th. BARCC is also nominated in the categories of “Most Innovative Use Of Social Media” and “Most Effective Awareness Campaign.” BARCC’s blog features the writing of my friends Shira and Dave, and I’ve linked their pieces on occasion. But I’m not pitching BARCC just because some of my friends work there.

If you’re from the Boston area, there’s a hometown rooting interest. BARCC is Boston’s entrant in a national competition. But if you’re not from Boston, and you read this blog, there’s an equally good reason: to elevate the profile of rape crisis services within the charitable universe. It’s easy to talk about food banks, and dedicated poverty charities have an easier time attracting funds, though still not enough. Cancer charities have the highest profile and some of the best funding of any charities. But people don’t want to talk about rape, and it is very tough for rape crisis services to get recognition and funding. A vote for BARCC is a vote to make this core feminist and core sexuality issue front and center, a vote to make that conversation happen even if people would prefer to ignore it.

That’s my pitch. Please do weigh in. I’m voting for BARCC.

You know Shira? I shouldn’t be surprised.

Hi Thomas, I’ve been a huge fan of your work since I read Yes Means Yes last year. I have a younger brother who’s coming of sexual age (he’s 16), and I’d like to introduce him to some male feminist role models. Aside from your own writings, who else should I refer him to? And do you have any suggestions for good “beginner” feminist articles for young men? Thanks!!
