When The Bully Is The Coach

November 12, 2010

Marlon Dorsey beats underaged boys with a giant leather strap, nonconsensually, while other boys watch, and calls them “bitch” and “sissy.” Saying that on Fetlife will get you banned, and possibly jailed. But when Dorsey does it, he wears a coach’s whistle, which in his mind somehow makes it okay.

Dorsey used a weightlifting belt to pummel players at a practice. Not for misconduct, even. Just for mistakes in practice. (Isn’t the point of practice to make mistakes? In school sports, I never got hit or even had to take a lap for making a mistake. For being mouthy, for indiscipline, for not trying; but never for a mistake. Mistakes are how we learn.)

This is all over CNN, and they have video. Dorsey isn’t denying it, and in fact his apology is nothing of the kind. It’s a defiant self-justification masquerading as an apology:

“I took it upon myself to save these young men from the destruction of self and what society has accepted and become silent to the issues our students are facing on a daily basis. I am deeply remorseful of my actions to help our students.”

[Emphasis supplied.] That’s not an apology. He’s not even saying he was wrong. He’s saying he was right. “remorseful” is a word he threw in there because he knew, or someone told him, that it would go over a lot better if he said it.

I’m going to go out on a limb and make a prediction. He’s either some kind of religious fanatic, or a predator who derived sexual gratification from his abuse of underaged boys, or both.[Psst! Check his Google search history.] But whatever his reasons, he cannot be allowed to work with children again, in any capacity, ever.

“I am deeply remorseful of my actions to help my students“. If he said it outloud, I’d be shocked if his voice wasn’t dripping with sarcasm. “Oh, yeah, I’m SO SORRY that I did something to HELP you”.

*shivers* I admit that I don’t know what a weightlifting belt is… but that’s really creepy as heck. I agree, he shouldn’t be allowed to work with children again.

I’m going to go with both. That is, a sexual predator using religion as a screen.

If this man professes to be a Christian, he’d better do some Bible reading, and not just the parts he likes to cherry-pick to justify his abuse of children. And he’d better do said Bible reading in prison. For a very very long time.

@Dreki: From what I understand, a weightlifting belt is a thick, 6″ or so wide strap of leather that weightlifters wear in the belief that it will protect their backs. It’s very heavy, and if wielded by a strong person, could possibly break bones and cause serious internal injuries. It’s not something that “just stings”. It’s a weapon.

This so-called “coach” needs to be charged with, at a minimum, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
