From The Department Of No Shit, Sherlock

December 15, 2008

86% of the decline in teen pregnancy is attributable to increases in contraception use. Only 14% is attributable to teens starting intercourse later. This according to Guttmacher in December 2006, but I just found it. It isn’t news that “just say no” indoctrination is a failure. Nor is it really news that contraception works. But in an environment where there is a barely concealed movement to oppose all methods by which a woman can control her reproductive destiny, repeating the obvious is often necessary.

Contraception, available and accompanied by accurate information, works. Nothing is 100% effective, but widespread, correct and consistent use of a barrier and a backup method for PIV intercourse would effect a tremendous reduction in unwanted pregnancies and STIs.

That is all.

This is a nice complement to the results of the 10-year Mathematica study that found abstinence-only programs to be ineffective (came out in April of 2007 I think). For some reason I hadn’t run across this 2006 Guttmacher gem either – thanks for posting it!
